Exercise 3: Design scannable content

Part 1: Review using checklist

Use the checklist for designing scannable content.

Review the following examples. Make a list of what is done well, and what needs improvement. Compare your ideas with our suggestions.

Example 1

TAFE NSW: Annual report web page

Example 1 - our suggested improvements

Organisation
  • Order is appropriate
  • Grouped into short sections, though the annual reports that were part of the Department’s annual report should be a separate group with the paragraph explanation directly above the last 2 links
Headings
  • Sections are labelled
  • The second subheading has 'Annual' repeated - perhaps start with the word ‘Archive’
  • Main heading is complete
  • Heading tags are used
  • Sentence case is used
Paragraphs
  • Sole paragraph focuses on a single topic
  • Starts with the topic sentence
  • Paragraph could be shorter
Lists
  • Links under Archive subhead should be styled as a list
  • Repetition of first words “Download the TAFE NSW Annual Report” should be avoided. Start with year of report and then include the rest of the label
Links
  • Links are concise
  • Behaviour of links is not identified – should include document format and size
  • Positioning would be improved if shown as a list, and with removal of repeated words at start of each item
  • No repetition

Example 2

Australian Government AIHW: Family, domestic and sexual violence web page

Example 2 - our suggested improvements

Organisation
  • Order is appropriate
  • No need for sections
Headings
  • Main heading OK
  • No need for subheadings
Paragraphs
  • Paragraphs are short
  • Should have been a list
Lists
  • List of links would be more appropriate
  • Each item in the list should begin with a clearly labelled link
Links
  • Links are concise
  • Link labels are not meaningful enough – have to read the whole sentence to figure it out
  • No repetition
