Chunk content into paragraphs

Summary: Organise information into concise, top-loaded sections; they are easier to scan-read.

To help make content easier to scan-read and look more inviting:

  • organise chunks of information into sections by topic
  • bring the most important information to the top of each section
  • keep each section short.

Focus each paragraph on a single topic

Make content easier to scan-read by presenting each topic or idea in its own paragraph. To shorten longer paragraphs, identify sub-topics or secondary ideas that can form their own paragraph.

Start with the topic sentence

‘Top load’ paragraphs by including the keywords or key message in the first sentence. This makes the topic of each paragraph more visible.

Keep paragraphs short

Long paragraphs are harder to scan-read. They’ll look even longer on smaller screens. Limit paragraphs to 2 or 3 short sentences. Occasional one-sentence paragraphs are fine.
