Exercise 2: Make content findable

Part 1: Review using checklist

Use the findability checklist to review the title, meta description and file/folder name for the following two examples.

Make a list of what is done well, and what needs improvement. Compare your ideas to our suggestions.

Example 1

Department of Premier and Cabinet: By-law directory web page
Title: Department of Premier and Cabinet
Meta description: none
File name/slug (last part of URL): council_by-laws

Example 1 - our suggested improvements

Title
  • Does not describe the content well because it doesn’t include the topic of the page
  • Has no topic keywords
  • Does include the site name
  • Is concise
  • Is not unique – other pages on this site have the same title
Meta description Does not include one
File name
  • Does use keywords and has no stop words
  • Is concise
  • Uses hyphen and underscore so is inconsistent

Example 2

Compare the Market: How to reduce your gas bill web page
Title: How to reduce your gas bill | Compare the Market
Meta description: There are many things we can all do to save on gas usage and bills. Here are our top 13 tips on how to reduce your gas bill this year.
File name/slug (last part of URL): gas-saving-tips

Example 2 - our suggested improvements

Title
  • Describes the content well
  • Keywords near the start
  • Site name at the end
  • Concise
  • Unique
Meta description
  • Does summarise the content, though needs editing because there are 12 tips, not 13.
  • Does support the title
  • 139 characters. But the first sentence doesn’t really add much. Could use those characters to be more descriptive.
  • Is unique
File name
  • Does use keywords. Does not include stop words
  • Is concise
  • Does use hyphens
